Quarantine will be the death knell of the summer holiday, unveils survey in the UK

Just over 51% of respondents were positive that they wouldn’t go on holiday abroad this year with just 22% saying that they would.

Over two thirds of people responding to a survey by The Online Buying Club (TOBC) have said that the proposed 14 day quarantine period would definitely put them off holidaying abroad this year.

Surveying 25,000 readers from Just about Travel, the consumer travel e-zine on May 30th and 31st, the responses demonstrate that the pandemic has hit confidence on whether to holiday abroad at all.

Just over 51% of respondents were positive that they wouldn’t go on holiday abroad this year with just 22% saying that they would.

But overwhelmingly, once you ask responders about the impact of the proposed quarantine period, then the number who won’t holiday abroad in 2020 substantially rises to almost 68%.

That the proposed quarantine is showing a sixteen percentage points gap shows that if there was no quarantine, the travel and tourism industry would be in a much better financial shape.

But it seems that if people won’t holiday abroad, not that many will be opting for a staycation either. Just under a quarter said that they would holiday in the UK this year with a greater number – 35% – saying that they wouldn't bother to holiday at all.

In a knock to the campervan, caravanning and camping industry that had begun to start feeling that this might be a good year, fewer than 5% of those planning a holiday said that it would opt for one of those.

After a UK beach holiday, the next highest choice was for a rural holiday which was chosen by 9.8% of responders.

Commenting on the figures, The Online Buying Club MD, Philip Ingham said, “The quarantine period has just put the tin lid on it. Those even lukewarm to the idea of an overseas holiday were put-off by the government’s plan, which has been made worse by the lacklustre explanation they have given as to why it should be introduced.”

He continued, “That attitude may alter if the government changes its mind, drops the idea or substantially alters it when the first three week-period of quarantine ends. It does seem to confirm what much of the travel industry has been saying. Quarantine will be the death knell of the summer holiday abroad for the vast majority of Brits.”
