Skiathos island collaborate with UNWTO on a Tourism Recovery Technical Assistance Project

Skiathos, Koukounaries.

The upcoming days, the Municipality of Skiathos and UNWTO will prepare the Residents Study that will be conducted in the island within September and October 2022.

The Municipality of Skiathos and the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO), advance their collaboration on the Tourism Recovery Technical Assistance Project designed for the island. Last week, Mr. Nikolaos Gkolfinopoulos, Senior Project Specialist of UNWTO, and Ms. Alkmini Gkritzali, Marketing Expert for the Skiathos Project, are in Skiathos to conduct on-site mission and lead the progress of the project.

Last Tuesday, Mayor, Mr. Thodoris Tzoumas, opened the meeting organized to present the Marketing Recommendations and Action Plan developed by UNWTO. The Mayor said "We warmly thank the UNWTO and especially Mr. Gkolfinopoulos for the excellent cooperation and the opportunity to work for the first time on such an important project with the participation of
representatives at local, national and international level. The Action Plan prepared by UNWTO will be a vital tool to guide our island towards sustainable tourism development" UNWTO, represented by Mr. Gkolfinopoulos, presented the in-depth analysis done of the present situation of Skiathos Island through social listening insights and content analysis of the interviews conducted with local, national and international stakeholders."

Mr. Gkolfinopoulos stated that “UNWTO is very pleased for this collaboration as it is one more demonstration of its commitment to local tourism development. The contribution of local, national, and international stakeholders through the interviews conducted was immense. We had the opportunity to assess the current situation of Skiathos based on discussions UNWTO held in April and May 2022 with hotels, tour operators, airlines, airports, marketing agencies, the key source market offices of the Greek National Tourism Organization,  and, of course, the local authorities. The recommendations we presented today, along with the Action Plan pillars and activities outlined, constitute a first step towards a strategic and systematic tourism development of the island that brings the benefit of Skiathos and its residents to the forefront. The positive and welcoming response we just received today from all stakeholders demonstrates that we are on the right track with a tailor made Action Plan for Skiathos of today, paving the way for Skiathos of tomorrow.”

The upcoming days, the Municipality of Skiathos and UNWTO will prepare the Residents Study that will be conducted in the island within September and October 2022.
