Sleep satisfaction for the RV lifestyle

Getting a good night’s sleep can translate to more energy and a more positive outlook the next day.

More and more people are choosing the RV way of life.  Some people are decidedly living more minimalistic, opting for the freedom of the road over the weight of a mortgage.  Others are recreationally enjoying an RV for adventure or family vacations.  Whatever your reason for getting an RV, there are some basic amenities that this experience includes.  Amidst the luxury of a built-in kitchen and bathroom, there is the fundamental essential, a place to sleep.

It is important to note that the quantity and quality of sleep you get can really have an impact on your journey.  Sleep affects your immune system, your appetite, your heart health, and even your mood.  Getting a good night’s sleep can translate to more energy and a more positive outlook the next day.

Sleeping in an RV can go a few ways.  It can be a “roughing it” situation, or it can be a comfortable place to rest and recharge for another day ahead.  Having the right RV Mattress for your bed makes all the difference between the two.

Finding the best RV mattress for your travels doesn’t have to be challenging. Just keep in mind that the compact space of an RV must be considered.  Not every mattress on the market will fit the space, or fit it well.  Those that do, come in varying degrees of quality as well.  Some things to look out for when searching for your next RV Mattress:

1. Length and width: A King size label, though somewhat standard in the industry, is not a guarantee of the dimensions for an RV.  For example, an RV King mattress may have different dimensions from one manufacturer to another, or even from one mattress model to another.  Some may measure 72” x 75”, some “72 x 80”, and some even 76” x 80”. Pre-measure the space allotted for your mattress and confirm before purchase that the new bed conforms to the necessary length and width.

2. Height: Here is something that is probably more important when choosing an RV mattress than it is when choosing one for a house.  Floor-to-ceiling in an RV is going to be much shorter than in a house.  The height of a bed is mostly an aesthetic decision for a typical household bedroom.  In an RV, if the bed is too thick, you may find yourself with your face too close to the ceiling.  There’s nothing comfortable about that.

3. What’s inside: The inner workings of a mattress can include multiple materials and express different levels of craftsmanship.  With thinner mattresses like RV mattresses, what is inside is especially important.  You don’t want purposeless fillers taking up space.  You want materials designed to be supportive, comfortable, and durable.

Thankfully, you don’t have to settle for a subpar sleep experience with modern RV mattresses.  They have come a long way!  They can be filled with memory foam, latex, coils, or even air!  They also come in a variety of sizes, even custom RV mattresses are available.  Gone are the days of mandatory back aches and lousy sleep.  Just because you are sleeping in a recreational vehicle, doesn’t mean you can’t fully enjoy the same quality sleep as you would in a traditional bed.  By providing body support and comfort, a good RV mattress can help you wake up refreshed, and ready for the day ahead!
