Study shows 1 in 10 travelers with a sleep disorder miss their flight because of TSA

Traveling can be a huge stress in the midst of holiday season, especially for those who struggle with their nightly slumber. From jet lag and insomnia to sleepwalking and sleep eating (that’s a new one), my team was curious to see how sleep disorders will impact holiday vacations for people across the U.S.

Everyone needs to go on vacation. Unfortunately, many who would likely benefit from a trip are forgoing their sought-after R&R time due to the added stress of traveling with a sleep disorder. Vacations can prove to be challenging for someone with poor sleep health on their own when they are meant to be an escape and relief. Between dealing with symptoms and explaining CPAP equipment to loved ones or friends, some people may struggle with taking overnight trips. Even people with good sleep health can still be affected by travel-related sleep loss such as jet lag, which can increase the risk of insomnia and sleep interruptions.

In a survey by CPAP.com -a family owned and operated business dedicated to providing affordable Sleep Apnea equipment to those who need sleep therapy- of over 1,000 people who had gone on an overnight vacation in the past year, half of whom had a sleep disorder, we sought to uncover the extent to which sleep disorders impact sleep quality and other aspects of vacationing. CPAP.com surveyed 1,000+ travelers and found that:
  • Over half of people with a sleep disorder plan to travel this holiday season, yet, 38% avoid long car rides and 15% avoid flying because of their condition
  • 1 in 10 miss their flight because their medications or CPAP machine are held up by security
  • The top 5 challenges of traveling with a sleep disorder are:
    – Staying up too late and being tired (71%)
    – Keeping other people awake (46%)
    – Sleeping in too late and missing events (35%)
    – Waking other people up (27%)
    – traveling with a CPAP machine (17%)
