Swoop launches service on sold-out flight from Edmonton

Airline announces Edmonton as second operational base.

CALGARY – Swoop celebrated its inaugural flight from Edmonton International Airport (YEG) to John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport (YHM). The sold-out flight is scheduled to depart at 10:25 AM MDT. In addition to the first flight, Swoop announced Edmonton as its second operational base.

"Edmonton is a market keen to enjoy the ultra-low-cost fares Swoop provides," said Steven Greenway, Swoop President and Chief Executive Officer. "This, along with Edmonton International Airport Authority's support, has meant that we've chosen Edmonton as our second operational base. Swoop, as an Alberta-born organization is thrilled to be in Edmonton as a second home and looks forward to providing more flight choices as well as the economic benefits that air service provides in the form of jobs, tourism and connecting economies."

As of October, Swoop will base two of its Boeing 737-800 aircraft in Edmonton resulting in the creation of almost 90 jobs in the region.

"We are happy to welcome Swoop to the Edmonton Metro Region," said Tom Ruth, President and Chief Executive Officer, Edmonton International Airport. "Edmonton's newest air carrier will provide more flight choices and great value to passengers. Today's announcement is a clear demonstration of Swoop's confidence in our region and our market."

"With almost a week of service underway at Swoop's Eastern Canada base in Hamilton, we are excited to connect with their Western Canada base in Edmonton," said Cathie Puckering, President and Chief Executive Officer of John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport. "We remain committed to offer an efficient operating environment for Swoop as their Hamilton to Edmonton daily service begins today."

Today, the airline also launched its inaugural flight from Winnipeg Richardson International airport to Hamilton.

"Winnipeg's exciting future will be enabled by more flights, options and destinations," said Barry Rempel, President and Chief Executive Officer of Winnipeg Airports Authority. "Especially in that context we are particularly excited to welcome Swoop as our newest strategic partner at Winnipeg Richardson International Airport."

Swoop also launched sold out flights from Hamilton, Abbotsford and Halifax on June 20.
