The most Instagrammable lake in Europe is Italy’s Lake Como, which has more than 1million tags dedicated to it on Instagram, or 9.7 images per square metre. Italy has three lakes which feature in the top 20, after Como is Lake Garda at number two with 975,846 tags (or 37.91 images per square metre), and Lake Maggiore in ninth place, with just over a quarter of a million photos tagged.

While Italy may take three spots in the top ten, it’s Switzerland’s glacial lakes which take the majority in the top 20. Lausanne’s own Lake Geneva takes the third spot on the list with just over 500,000 photos – an incredible 115.7 photos per square meter, as the largest lake on the list. Following Lake Geneva is Lake Constance in eighth place with 268,908 photos, Lake Zurich in 10th spot with 166,310 images, and Lake Lucerne taking the 12th spot with just under 150,000 images tagged on the app.

Both Scotland and Germany have two lakes within the top 20, though Scotland takes both of the last spots in the top five with Lochs Lomond and Ness. Despite the folklore that surrounds it, Loch Ness is pipped to fourth spot by Loch Lomond which has almost 60,000 more photos of it on Instagram, with 489,991 tags versus Loch Ness’ 431,018. These are the first lakes within the UK which are featured on the list, followed by the Lake District’s biggest lake, Lake Windermere which sits in 13th spot with just over 120,000 images on Instagram.

Each of the remaining countries featured have only one lake that makes the top 20, but each of the lakes has between 50,000 and 350,000 images tagged on the photo sharing app, making them still highly Instagrammable and well worth a visit on your next trip abroad.
