The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway promotes Ted Johnston to General Manager

Bringing a decade of industry experience from markets and railroads across the United States, prior to joining The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway team, Ted started his railroad career with Union Pacific Railroad.

COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. – The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway announced that Ted Johnston has been appointed general manager of America’s highest railway. In this leadership role, Ted will oversee all aspects of the railway operations. Prior to this new role, Ted was assistant general manager since April 2018 and a crucial member in the reopening of the railway last May and the celebration of its 130th anniversary in June 2021.

“As a talented, dedicated professional with extensive knowledge in railroad operations, Ted is uniquely positioned to excel in this role," said Jack Damioli, President and CEO of The Broadmoor. “We are pleased to have him advance his career and manage operations for one of the country’s most iconic railways.”

Originally built in 1891 and owned and operated by The Broadmoor since 1925, this historic railway is the highest railroad in America, the highest cog railway in the world, one of Colorado’s top attractions, and one of the nation’s most unique experiences.  The railway reopened last May after a $100 million renovation of its tracks, cogs, railcars, and depot to create a new and improved journey to the summit. The railway (one of only two cog railways in the U.S.) reaches a height of 14,115 feet and the view from the summit is where “America The Beautiful” was penned.

Bringing a decade of industry experience from markets and railroads across the United States, prior to joining The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway team, Ted started his railroad career with Union Pacific Railroad where he completed its Operations Management Training (OMT) program in 2012. He served in various operational roles for Union Pacific in Arkansas, Oklahoma and Kansas. Ted joined the railroad consulting firm of R.L. Banks & Associates in Washington D.C. in 2017 where he supported the firms operational, regulatory and safety practices.

“I am excited for the opportunity to oversee operations for The Broadmoor Manitou and Pikes Peak Cog Railway and to educate travelers and generate excitement for this one-of-a-kind experience for seasons to come,” said Ted Johnston. “This scenic American adventure has such a rich history and I’m thrilled to be a part of it.”

Ted holds a degree in supply chain management from the University of Oklahoma, Price College of Business. He resides in Colorado Springs, CO and spends his free time following the Oklahoma Sooners athletic teams and on the golf course.
