The future of airports

By 2030, service robots will staff airports – Robots will replace existing check-in processes, will have access to real-time airline customer data, and will be able to understand customer’s health and emotional states.

Many of us spend the majority of the year looking forward to the next holiday we have booked. But before we can get to our dream destination, most of us will have to go through the ordeal of an airport first, and from worrying about checking our luggage in on time to then waiting hours until boarding time, it can be a pretty draining experience.

But did you know airports are set to get a whole lot more enjoyable?

Vero Solutions researched to find out what changes are set to take place across the next 30 years in airports to help you start your holiday and relax a little earlier. You could be able to bypass security as a trusted traveller or take off on a double decker runway in just a number of years. Either way, airports will see you start your trip a whole lot more smoothly.

  • 300% increase in passengers in the next 30+ years – in 2017 commercial airlines flew just over four billion passengers across the world; this figure is set to boom to 16 billion by 2050. With a 300% increase, it seems that airports are making exciting changes to prepare for a busy future
  • Digital hand luggage scanners emerging in just one year – By 2019, Amsterdam's Schiphol airport aims to be utilising digital hand luggage scanners. These scanners will allow passengers to keep liquids and laptops in their bags for the first time
  • By 2030, service robots will staff airports – Robots will replace existing check-in processes, will have access to real-time airline customer data, and will be able to understand customer's health and emotional states
  • By 2050, the runway as you know it will be changed completely – Halfway through this century, airports will be looking to increase their flights whilst saving as much space as possible. Circular runways will allow planes to take off from any direction, double-deck runways alleviate spacing issues and remote runways in the sea are all expected to exist.
