Two local companies with a love for the city, Shinola and Bedrock, brought in world-class partners for the 129 room hotel. The hotel is operated by Mac&Lo and features innovative food and beverage programming from award-winning Chef Andrew Carmellini of NoHo Hospitality Group. The team tapped Gachot Studios for the design and Kraemer Design Group as the architect of record.

The first Shinola Hotel, with inviting warmth and thoughtful design, opened in downtown Detroit’s shopping district in January. Two local companies with a love for the city, Shinola and Bedrock, are working with partners picked for their Detroit roots and Michigan connections to create a memorable hotel experience that feels like it couldn’t exist anywhere but 1400 Woodward Avenue.

On a downtown street thick with history and deeply meaningful for locals, the project marries two lovingly restored buildings – the onetime T.B. Rayl & Co. department store and a former Singer sewing-machine store. They’re joined with three thoughtful new annexes designed to breathe new life into the block.

The Shinola Hotel will have 129 guest rooms – with residential style units which offer a different experience during each visit – along with 16,000 square feet of retail and F&B space, including a lobby restaurant, mezzanine lounge, conservatory, and magnificent event space. But the fun doesn’t just stop inside. On the property, guests will find an activated alley bustling with life and the hotel’s outdoor beer hall.

With Detroiters and visitors in mind, the Shinola Hotel will provide something else brand-new for downtown: a social “living room” designed for spending quality time in good company. Richly appointed rooms off the lobby will offer exceptionally warm environments to create, snack or just hang out.

Detroit’s Growth Inspires a New Kind of Hotel
Every great city has a hotel that captures its character. The Shinola Hotel will serve as a new hub for a downtown that continues to make national headlines with its momentum.

Both Shinola and Bedrock focused on bringing sophisticated hospitality options to the Detroit market, to create an incredible hotel experience that will add something completely unique to that landscape. Bedrock believes that an increased investment will attract businesses and talent to Detroit’s Central Business District, making not only a beautiful place for guests to stay but also a place for this momentum to build.

As with all Shinola products, the team has partnered with the best creatives and makers to craft something lasting, timeless, and warm.

Furniture, wallcoverings and accessories are custom-designed and primarily manufactured in the US; much of it was produced in Michigan by partners including Pewabic, known for its covetable ceramics, Booms Stone Company, responsible for the elegant stone finishes in the guest rooms, and Great Lakes Stainless, whose decorative metals can be found throughout the hotel’s public spaces. The hotel’s nod to Michigan doesn’t end with its craftsmanship and can even be found throughout the mini bar which will overflow with iconic staples including Great Lakes Chips, Shinola Cola, Vernors Ginger Ale, and local craft beers to name a few.

Just as Shinola strives to produce unparalleled products with premium components, the Shinola Hotel will elevate each stay by highlighting the unexpected beauty in everyday objects.

Tailored, Streamlined, and Precise, Hotel’s Design Captures Shinola’s Elegance
To envision Shinola as a hotel, the brand tapped New York’s Gachot Studios, whose portfolio includes New York’s Smyth Tribeca Hotel, Brooklyn’s Royal Palms Shuffleboard Club, Marc Jacobs and Shinola flagship stores in New York and LA.

The Shinola Hotel radiates confident, crafted luxury and genuine warmth. Private clubs in London were a major inspiration. Caramel, camel, and gray are dominant tones, along with soft blush, deep greens and rich woods. In-room materials like oil-rubbed bronze, soft leather, plush mohair and American white oak evoke beautifully appointed homes. Cream hallway walls throughout the property get accents of Shinola blue, a signature color developed by Gachot; a lone paint chip unearthed in the Singer building inspired the hue.

Detroit’s Kraemer Design Group, a world leader in historic renovation and architectural consulting, served as Architect of Record and Historic Consultant on the hotel – a hugely complex and delicate project from an architectural standpoint. The group is known for having a passion for reviving and creating buildings in their home city [The David Whitney Building; Vinton; Broderick Tower].

Library Street Collective, an esteemed Detroit-based gallery, will curate a provocative mix of art for the hotel with a broad representation of both local and international artists. The reception area will become its own striking work of art; Detroit artist Margo Wolowiec will cover four walls, floor to ceiling with custom woven panels creating an immersive environment of color and energy.

Wall and floor coverings were all designed and created for the hotel and inspired by the look and feel of the buildings’ original architecture. Marbleized wallpaper mimics marble found buried in the Rayl’s building. Waterworks, the iconic American bathroom design company, partnered with Shinola on custom bathroom fixtures that take cues from caseback details of Shinola’s luxury watches. Blankets, woven in the US, carry a signature Shinola Hotel stripe pattern. American-made Heath Ceramics created custom tableware for the Living Room and in-room dining.

The Shinola Hotel is designed to surprise guests on their first visit or their twentieth. Room keys, powered by RFID chips, will be complemented by custom leather fobs with an engraving of the room number and the hotel’s street address. Bath amenities, made specifically for Shinola Hotel, are inspired by Rayl’s, one of the building’s previous occupants. Each suite will have a coveted Shinola Runwell turntable (retail price $2,500) and a curated collection of vinyl. Various rooms will include some of Shinola’s most iconic products including the Power Supply Extension Cord and shoe polish and leather care, along with items made especially for the hotel including a bedside clock, leather throw pillows, and custom blankets.

For luxurious details at every turn, the Shinola Hotel also picked partners who share Shinola’s commitment to craft. Guests will sleep on 100% cotton, 300-thread-count percale custom bed linens from Frette, an indulgence rarely seen in hotels.

Andrew Carmellini’s NoHo Hospitality Group to Oversee Restaurant, In-Room Dining, Event Spaces
For food and beverage as well-crafted as their surroundings, Shinola turned to Andrew Carmellini and NoHo Hospitality Group partners, Josh Pickard and Luke Ostrom, whose portfolio includes beloved eateries and bars like New York’s The Dutch, and Locanda Verde, and Westlight. At the Shinola Hotel, NoHo Hospitality Group will oversee San Morello (now open), a Southern Italian restaurant serving authentic, wood-fired dishes, pizzas and house-made pastas using local, seasonal ingredients, Evening Bar (now open), a comfortable, classic American bar serving seasonally crafted cocktails and bar bites, The Brakeman (opening Spring), an American beer hall featuring rotating drafts of craft beers from the Midwest), Penny Red’s (opening Spring), a fried chicken spot, serving up buckets of fried chicken, honey-butter biscuits, and local farmstand sides, the Living Room, in-room dining, and banquet/event spaces that include the Birdy Room- a one-of-a-kind event space that can be found on the second floor of the Annex of Shinola Hotel.

For operations of Shinola Hotel, Shinola and Bedrock tapped Mac&Lo Hospitality, whose founders, Sergio Maclean and Audrey Laurent, have collaborated with restaurant, hospitality, and luxury brands, including The Mercer, The Pod Hotels, The Bowery, The Marlton, and Ace. The pair moved to Detroit to immerse themselves in Shinola and the city.
