The importance of having fast and reliable internet while traveling

Let’s look at the importance of having fast and reliable access to the internet in greater detail.

In an increasingly interconnected and digitized world, the importance of fast and reliable internet access cannot be overstated. This doesn’t just apply to access from your home or workplace – it applies when you’re traveling (whether it be for leisure or work) as well.

You may be wondering why internet access when you’re traveling is important, especially if you’re on holiday. After all, shouldn’t going on vacation mean that you can disconnect, unplug, and relax?

Ideally, this would always be the case. However, just a short drive across town will prove that in reality, this isn’t the case – disconnecting from the internet completely is difficult (if not impossible), and even going online occasionally requires reliable internet access.

Let’s look at the importance of having fast and reliable access to the internet in greater detail.

Remote working becomes easier
This is a two-in-one – it will not only affect you when you’re traveling for work, but it can also affect you on vacation!

If you’re traveling for work, the need for fast internet is pretty self-evident. After all, you’re still expected to check in with higher-ups, attend meetings, and submit reports on time. To do all of this, you’ll not only need Internet access, but you’ll also need high-speed Internet access as well – video calling apps and email attachments can become challenging at lower speeds.

However, the value of Internet access for remote working applies to when you’re on vacation as well.

More and more people are opting to work from home permanently. This has several implications, and one of the most interesting is that you’re no longer bound by a work schedule.

If you’re working from home, you can usually plan a holiday anytime, anywhere. All you need to do is bring your laptop along and meet your targets while you’re on vacation.

However, the increase in people working from home also means that Internet access has become a challenge. Necessary apps like Zoom and Google Hangouts require you to have at least 1 Mbps speed, especially if you’re on a video call. Additionally, the greater the number of participants involved, the higher the speed needs to be.

These requirements make access to high-speed internet while you’re traveling essential. Additionally, your access needs to be reliable as well – the last thing you need is for your internet to stop working while you’re in the middle of an important work meeting.

You can download files quickly
Again, this benefit applies when you’re traveling for both work and leisure.

If you’re traveling for work and receive important files from the office, fast, reliable internet access will ensure that you’ll be able to download the files as soon as they reach your email inbox. This will make any work meetings you need to attend easier, as you’ll have all the access you need at your fingertips.

If you’re traveling for leisure, fast download speeds allow you to prepare for times when internet access is impossible. As pointed out by Infinium’s internet professionals, download speeds can range from 10 Mbps to 1 Gbps+. The faster your speed, the quicker you’ll be able to download large media files like movies and video games.

While we emphasize the importance of internet access while traveling, there are situations in which it is impossible. This includes during flights that don’t offer internet connectivity and when you’re on the road in areas with bad broadband connectivity. In these situations, having your laptop ready and full of entertainment options will keep you occupied for as long as necessary. If you’re traveling with kids, it can be a complete lifesaver.

Allows you to contact people
Even if you’re going on vacation with the specific aim to disconnect as much as possible, unplugging completely is rarely possible.

Most of us don’t travel with all our loved ones. Instead, at least some of them are back home, and you may need to stay in contact with them while on
vacation.

Additionally, if you’re traveling alone, having access to your phone is crucial. This is especially true if you’re a woman traveling alone.

Traveling alone as a woman can be challenging, and your phone is usually there to help. For one, phones with good internet access allow you to stay in touch with loved ones through apps such as WhatsApp that don’t carry the high prices that roaming phone plans do. Staying in contact with your family and friends at home can alleviate their worries and provide you with someone you can turn to in case of an emergency.

Additionally, today, there are numerous apps available to make solo traveling easier, especially for women. These apps include everything from helping you connect with other solo travelers to location apps that provide local first responders with information in case of an emergency and more. Most, if not all, of these apps, require internet access to function.

While these apps can often function with slower internet speeds, they’re no longer as effective. Additionally, if your Internet access is reliable, the apps provide you with peace of mind – you know that you’re safe and can access help, and you don’t have to worry about connectivity issues in the case of an emergency.

There are numerous other advantages of having access to a fast and reliable internet connection, including while you’re traveling. These include making it easier to place phone calls – yup, some services, like WhatsApp as mentioned above, also allow you to make phone calls over the internet.

Additionally, some travelers rely on internet access for a memorable vacation. They want to document their trip on social media, and some may even be major figures on social media whose careers depend on posting frequently and often.

Without access to fast, reliable internet, you’re likely to find that your travels are not as fun as you thought they would be. Even people planning to go completely off-grid (at least when it comes to the internet) may find the lack of internet access problematic – there’s no telling when you may encounter an emergency that turns your plans on their head.

Regardless of whether you’re traveling for work or fun, high-speed internet access is crucial. If you’re staying in a hotel, make sure to confirm they have Wi-Fi access for guests. Your hotel will likely provide free Wi-Fi services – however, it’s always best to confirm the price when you ask for a username and password, so you don’t accidentally ruin your travel budget.
