NEW YORK – In 2020, The Royal Portfolio celebrates its 20th anniversary, marking two decades since Liz and Phil Biden began opening their family's holiday homes to guests. They began with their home in Kruger National Park, which is now the sumptuous safari lodge Royal Malewane, eventually opening three more properties, including their original beach house in Hermanus. The family's vision has grown yet remained from the start: to share their South Africa with travelers from around the world, from the wild bush to the lush winelands to the dramatic coast.

Over the course of 20 years, the Bidens realized their vision, aided by strong family and community support. "Each and every team member is considered to be a part of the family," says Liz Biden, the family matriarch and designer behind the properties' iconic style.

Having developed a unique circuit of experiences across four hotels, The Royal Portfolio has been praised for its superb service and high luxury, which are rooted in a philosophy of genuine hospitality. "Even though [our guests] are staying in a luxury hotel, they feel a sense of belonging and comfort – as if they have come home," says Liz Biden.

And the philosophy is a winning one. This year, each of The Royal Portfolio's hotels received a '5 Star Premium' award from the Tourism Grading Council of South Africa, a classification for "luxury in both product quality and service standards." Royal Malewane, Birkenhead House, La Residence and The Silo represent four of only fourteen properties in the country to receive the honor.

The Biden's passion and influence extends beyond hospitality, as well. The family established The Royal Portfolio Foundation, which aims to uplift local communities, promote wildlife conservation and protect the environment. Based on The Royal Portfolio's 3 Crowns Framework – community, conservation, environment – projects include rhino and leopard conservation, anti-poaching efforts, building schools and children's centers and supporting medical facilities.
