Three key issues to consider when building a career during your travels

MBO Partners estimates that up to 4.8 million people in the US regard themselves as digital nomads. Furthermore, around 17 million also aspire to take the step in the future.

When you are stuck in an office on a day-to-day basis, it is easy to daydream about how great it would be to just hand in your resignation, become your own boss and chase your dreams of seeing the world.

However, for a huge number of people, that daydream has become a reality thanks to the ‘digital nomad’ lifestyle.

The ultimate work/life balance
The term was coined to describe people who have chosen to give up traditional jobs to work when they want to in remote locations across the globe. Put simply, the lifestyle means they can combine their careers with the sheer thrill of travelling to far-flung and exotic destinations. It has become hugely popular in recent years and MBO Partners estimates that up to 4.8 million people in the US regard themselves as digital nomads. Furthermore, around 17 million also aspire to take the step in the future.

According to research by FlexJobs at the end of 2018, many digital nomads tend to work in creative or technical industries, such as writing, IT or marketing. However, with the endless possibilities of the internet seemingly making the world smaller every day, it is fair to say there are plenty of other paths you could choose.

But what are the key issues you should bear in mind if you’re planning to build a career while on your travels? Here we offer up a few bits of advice regarding the lifestyle.

There are no stereotypes
Choosing to become a digital nomad can be daunting and, for many people, the concept probably brings to mind a young man hopping from country to country with just a laptop for company.

However, the reality of being a digital nomad is very different, as the aforementioned FlexJobs survey found seven in ten are actually women. More than a third are also employed by a company rather than being freelance, while 69 per cent are married and 32 per cent identify as baby boomers. It just goes to show that simply anyone can do it.

Protect yourself
Even though you are away from home, you should have key tools in place. FlexJobs found that 74 per cent of digital nomads have health insurance and 55 per cent are saving for retirement, but do not forget about your own responsibilities too.

For example, if you were a wellness coach or yoga instructor providing support via Skype, it would be useful to have yoga teacher insurance in place. As Next Insurance outlines, this would protect you in the event of issues like a student blaming you for an injury or problems if you mistakenly used a copyrighted image on a social media account.

Try to plan ahead
Another interesting finding in the FlexJobs study was how key challenges faced by digital nomads include finding reliable Wi-Fi and a good place to work.

While you may love being spontaneous, it is worth having some form of plan in place to ensure you are going to be able to do your work wherever you are going. Do your research and ensure that you have a primary plan of action and even a contingency in place.

A time for adventure
The digital nomad lifestyle has become a huge hit in recent years and it offers major potential for those who want to keep earning while having some incredible travel experiences. We hope the pointers above will help you get started with your own adventure.
