Travel with safety in mind: Six ways to stay safe when you’re travelling

Of course travelling is fun and exciting but if you exercise caution then you’re more guaranteed to enjoy every moment, rather than spending several days trying to figure out when your purse was stolen…

No one likes to anticipate the worst. However, when you’re travelling across continents, meeting new people every day, immersing yourself in new cultures and barely finding enough time to sleep between airports, it’s always worth investing in your safety. Of course travelling is fun and exciting but if you exercise caution then you’re more guaranteed to enjoy every moment, rather than spending several days trying to figure out when your purse was stolen…

Read on for 6 ways to stay safe when you’re travelling.

Don’t forget your travel insurance
It seems simple enough, but the amount of travellers, holidaymakers and backpackers who head abroad without insurance and protection is utterly mind boggling. Therefore taking out an insurance policy before you travel is an absolute must. International travel medical insurance ensures that no matter where you are in the world, you’ll have access to the best medical treatment possible, you’re covered for all treatments, medications and transport and so much more. So whether you crack a tooth at the street market and need to see a dentist or you slip in the airport and break your leg, you’re covered. You can enjoy your travels knowing you’re protected.

Keep your phone charged
It’s not always easy to keep your phone’s battery alive, especially when you’re taking lots of pictures and presumably filming a lot of things too. However having a fully charged phone means that (internet depending) you’ll have access to google maps (check out offline maps before you travel) and your contacts should you need to make an emergency call. Invest in a portable charger so you can keep your phone topped up throughout the day.

Get to know the emergency numbers
999, 911…we’re probably all familiar with those emergency numbers. But what about in the Far East? Australia? New Zealand? Do you know what number to call in an emergency? If not, make a note of them so you’re not stranded and can get help if you need it.

Be wary of stray cats and dogs
They look cute, sometimes all they want is love and food…making it difficult to resist a stroke or a cuddle. However, you should always exercise caution. The last thing you want is to get bitten, develop an infection or even worse, contract rabies! It’s difficult but use your best judgement when it comes to stray animals.

Do plenty of research
You might have picked an amazing hotel or hostel that’s known for a great party atmosphere for excellent guided tours and activities. But have you researched anything else? Do plenty of research to ascertain any areas you should avoid, any scams that are prevalent, how you are expected to dress, and even which side of the road people drive on. Don’t think of it as spoiling the spontaneity of your trip – you’re simply investing in your safety!

Back up cash is king
You may get pickpocketed or misinterpret the amount you’re spending before its too late. Having back up cash that is either hidden in your luggage or on your person is a smart idea.
