Traveling by motorbike? Keep yourself safe by following these simple rules

Since you cannot really control others’ actions on the road, you must take precautions to ensure you are as safe as possible.

Riding motorbikes for long distances is fun, however, it can be risky if you do not follow certain steps to ensure you’re protected on the road. Unlike cars, motorbikes do not have walls to protect you from collisions so injuries can be dangerous. This means that if you are not careful or if other drivers on the road are not following traffic laws, you may end up in a life-threatening situation.

Since you cannot really control others’ actions on the road, you must take precautions to ensure you are as safe as possible.

1. Wear the right protective gear
One of the most important precautions you need to take as a motorcyclist who wants to travel using your bike is wearing protective gear. The first thing that comes to mind is a helmet to protect your head from falls or accidents, but there’s other gear you need to take into consideration as well.

For example, wearing leather pants protects you from road rash and also ensures you do not get scratched up by the pavement. Wearing a leather jacket also provides you with similar protection in case of an accident. If you are uncomfortable wearing leather, especially in hot weather, you can at least protect your knees and elbows with pads.

2. Follow traffic laws
Traffic laws differ from one country to another and sometimes from one state to another. Learning traffic laws and following them diligently ensures that you remain safe on the road most of the time. It guarantees that you decrease the risk of being involved in a T-bone motorcycle accident which can wound you terribly. Of course, following traffic laws also ensures that if you are ever involved in this type of accident, you are not blamed and can easily settle matters with your insurance company and the other driver without being accused of causing the accident yourself.

3. Use turn signals
Turn signals are crucial to use if you’re on a motorbike to make sure that other drivers on the road are aware of your next move ahead of time. Some vehicles have blind spots so using left and right signals before moving to another lane or making a turn is going to help others realize your presence and be more cautious on the road. Believe it or not, most motorbike accidents occur because other drivers on the road do not notice the bike.

4. Have first aid supplies
First aid supplies are a must on the road. Whether you’re the most careful person on the road, or  like living dangerously and driving fast when traveling, having supplies for first aid is necessary to maintain your safety and perform emergency aid if there are any issues on the road. If you have the space for it, you may also want to get a small fire extinguisher. These safety measures are important whether you plan on short-distance riding or traveling long distances.

5. Check the weather forecast
The climate can have a direct effect on road safety. You can avoid a lot of road issues if you check the weather beforehand. You can figure out what the weather is in advance by checking online. You can get a report on the weather for up to a week which can be helpful.

For example, if there is a chance of rain, you can arrange for accommodations rather than risking the slick roads which are dangerous in a car, let alone a motorbike. Likewise, if the weather is too hot for the day, you can ensure your bike’s cooling system is up to par so that it does not overheat while you’re traveling.

6. Inspect your ride regularly
Regularly maintaining your motorcycle is crucial to travel safely and guarantee that your bike does not break down on you at any moment. A motorcycle that has not been checked before a long drive can lead to ending up stranded on the road due to mechanical issues that could have been easily avoided. Not only will you be frustrated if this occurs, but you will have to wait and pay for assistance.

Not to mention you may ruin integral parts of your motorcycle without meaning to if you do not check for issues before traveling.
