What mattress size is right for you while traveling?

If you’re not sure of which mattress size is right for you and your family members when traveling, the below sizing guidelines will help.

Beds come in many different sizes. When you're traveling, hotels usually give you a few options for the bed sizes. You might be able to choose from a room with one or two doubles, two queens or a king and a double. You may also see an option for a crib or roll-away twin bed. If you're not sure of which mattress size is right for you and your family members when traveling, these sizing guidelines will help.

Crib
Crib mattresses measure 28 inches wide by 52 inches long. They are the right size for babies and toddlers. When you're traveling, you'll likely need to reserve a crib for your hotel room. If you're traveling with a child under the age of three, this is a good mattress size.

Twin and Twin XL
Standard twin mattresses measure 38 inches wide by 75 inches long, and extra-long twin mattresses measure 38 inches wide by 80 inches long. These beds are common in hotel rooms that have bunk or trundle beds for children. They are also common in hotel rooms that are set up for several guests. If you're a small person or are traveling with a child, a twin mattress could be the right one for you.

Full and Full XL
A full mattress measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long. Its extra-long counterpart measures 54 inches wide by 80 inches long. This is a good option if you travel alone and move around a little in your sleep. It also gives you some extra space if you travel with a pet or you like to use a large body pillow.

Queen
Queen size beds measure 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. If you move around some while you sleep, this is a good option. It's also a good option for people who are taller than average and for those who travel with a sleep partner.

King
The king size bed is the widest mattress available. It measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long. This is the size to choose if you are an active sleeper and move around a lot at night. If you have a sleep partner and one or both of you spread out or are stomach sleepers, this is also a good option. People who travel with a dog might also want a king size bed. This is also the size for you if you prefer a luxurious sleep experience.

California King
If you're more than 72 inches tall, a California king could be the right size of bed for you. Longer and narrower than the traditional king mattress, it measures 72 inches wide by 84 inches long. It's not easy to find a California king bed on a hotel's website, so you might want to call the reservations desk and speak with an agent in order to get a room with this bed size.

When choosing one of these mattress sizes for your next trip, consider a few things. If you're tall, an extra-long bed or California King will support your full height. Also consider your sleeping style. If you're one who does a spread eagle, you'll be more comfortable in the biggest bed available. If you curl yourself in the fetal position around a pillow, you'll be more comfortable on a smaller bed.
