ADB SAFEGATE to boost operational efficiency of baggage handling at King Khalid International Airport

Signs a 5-year implementation and support agreement for a Baggage Reconciliation System (BRS) at the airport in partnership with SATCO.

ADB SAFEGATE Airport Systems (AS) has signed a 5-year implementation and support agreement for a Baggage Reconciliation System (BRS) to boost operational efficiency of baggage handling in King Khalid International Airport (KKIA), Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The contract was signed in partnership with Saudi Arabian Trading and Construction Company (SATCO), a leading gate solutions provider and build-transfer-operate (BTO) specialist at various airports in the region, and who is key member of the renovation project of Terminals 3 and 4 at KKIA.

The BRS from ADB SAFEGATE will be installed in the recently renovated terminals that are due to open in the spring of 2021 and will serve up to 40 million passengers over the next five years. The solution will help reduce mishandling of baggage and minimize the cost of repatriating the bags, while improving security of baggage operations and overall tracking visibility from check-in to collection at destination. It is expected to improve the airport's compliance with international standards such as IATA Resolution 753 that mandatorily requires airlines to track their passengers' bags in four key locations namely – acquisition from the passenger; loading onto the aircraft; transfer; and delivery back to the passenger.

“Airports and airlines pay a heavy price when bags fail to travel with their respective passengers. In addition to an average cost of US$ 150 that it takes to repatriate the bag to its original final destination, the impact of customer dissatisfaction is far worse,” says John Wordley, Global Sales & Marketing Director, ADB SAFEGATE Airport Systems. "Our solution provides a significant cost-savings by minimizing the number of lost or damaged luggage via real-time location tracking of bags."

"We have a long standing relationship with ADB SAFEGATE, having partnered with the company on multiple projects in the Middle East. In fact, at KKIA itself, ADB SAFEGATE has helped in improving efficiency of the airport's apron operations for over four years now. We are confident that having them on board will scale up baggage management processes at the airport, improving operational efficiency and safety," added Jose C. Jamhouri, Senior Vice President, Airports Systems Division & Logistics, SATCO.

ADB SAFEGATE's BRS is the leading solution on the market used by busy airports such as London Heathrow and Zurich as well as airlines like Air China and Caribbean Airlines. Given ADB SAFEGATE's near 30-year experience in the areas of baggage security, reducing mishandling and making aircraft turnarounds more efficient, the solution is a perfect fit to complement existing processes at KKIA.
