An official report announced that tourism in Egypt had increased by 12.1 percent from last year, according to figures taken last May.



The report, released by the Central Agency for Public Mobilization and Statistics, clarified Saturday that 686,150 tourists spent 6,492,538 tourist nights in Egypt last May. It was also noted that 74 percent of the tourists were European, 13.6 percent were Middle Eastern, followed by Asian and then African peoples.



111,931 tourists traveled from Arab countries, noting a 24 percent rise from the previous year, with Libyans accounting for a significant proportion of the visitors.



In another development, the board of the General Authority for Free Zones and Investment is to hold an emergency meeting on Tuesday in Sharm el-Sheikh under the auspices of the authority`s Chairman, Zayed Bahaa El-Dein. During this meeting, the discussion will focus on bolstering investment in South Sinai in the aftermath of the bombings. Prior to the meeting, the chairman of the authority and its board members are scheduled to meet with its South Sinai investors in order to determine their needs and requests.
