The upcoming Chinese New Year is expected to generate over Bt2.5 billion tourism-related revenues for the Thai economy, according to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT).

TAT`s Governor Juthamas Siriwan told TNA yesterday that about 126,800 Chinese tourists were expected to visit Thailand during the upcoming Chinese New Year festival, scheduled on 21-24 January.

The figure would be around 27.55% higher than last year, she noted.

The upcoming Chinese New Year is also expected to generate up to Bt2.578 tourism-related revenues for the Thai economy, said the TAT chief.

Most of the foreign tourist arrivals in the kingdom during the period would come from five major tourist markets, including China, Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan, and Malaysia, she disclosed.

A recent survey of tour agents and companies showed that tour programmes from China to Thailand had been fully booked during the Chinese New Year, as airlines had increased their flights to Bangkok during the period, Juthamas said.

Chinese New Year revelers from Malaysia were also expected to flow in the country`s southern business hub of Hat Yai in Songkhla Province during the period, she projected. (TNA)
