Uzbekistan<.> is undertaking efforts aimed at boosting its bilateral ties with Greece in relation to trade and tourism.

A presentation of Uzbekistan was held last week in Athens where the deputy air transport minister of the former Soviet bloc country noted that his nation is

proceeding with its economic development and pointed out the advantages of cooperation in tourism.

Uzbekistan has had active involvement in the revival of the Silk Roads which links culture, the economy, tourism and cooperation between East and West. The country is a member of a number of international organisations such as UNESCO and the World Tourism Organisation.

The minister, M. Palvanos, said that Uzbekistan`s contribution to the Silk Roads initiative began with an air link via Uzbekistan Airways between Tashkent and 25 destinations around the world, one of which is Athens.

As Uzbekistan Airways`, manager in Greece, P. Ilianov, explained the company plays an important role in supporting cooperation between Uzbekistan`s tourism entrepreneurs and those of Europe and the US.

Hellenic Tourism Organisation (EOT) chairman Yiannis Stefanidis attended the event as did a number of local tourism entrepreneurs.

Uzbekistan Airways` fleet employs Boeing 767 and Airbus A-310 aircraft for long haul destinations with safety and comfort a top priority. The company has an Athens office and offers two weekly flights between Athens and Tashkent, via Rome on a B-757 jet.

Ilianov stated that the firm would soon introduce new destinations such as Tokyo and Singapore.
