Melbourne’s premier meeting space is doing its part to ensure our younger generation has the business skills to drive our economy forward. The Melbourne Exhibition Centre has blocked off space in its bays for the Young Achievement Australia’s Business Skills Program expo, free of charge.

The Business Skills Program gives students the chance to form their own company, sell shares to raise capital, elect a board of directors, develop, market and sell a product and then finally liquidate and return any profit to their shareholders. They then hold a trade expo to showcase and sell the products they have developed, manufactured and marketed throughout the course.

Melbourne Exhibition and Convention Centre chief executive Leigh Harry says it is a crucial programme for Australia’s business community. “This programme ensures the younger generation are equipped with the tools they need to build businesses and therefore assist in continuing to strengthen this country’s economy.”

For Victoria the business events sector alone is shaping up as one of the fastest growing and highest yielding tourism markets – contributing approximately $1.2 billion to the State’s economy per annum. New infrastructure like the new Melbourne Convention Centre currently under construction adjacent to the Exhibition centre provides more opportunities to build on that.

The new centre will be one of the most impressive architectural and environmental buildings in Australia. When it opens for business in 2009, it will be Australia’s largest combined convention and exhibition facility. But, Harry says, there’s much more to it than that.

“While it’ll be structurally striking, it’s the service that will really see it stand above its competitors. The business skills program is vital in ensuring we can maintain that level of service our delegates expect in the future.”

The Young Achievement Australia expo will be held on Saturday July 28 at the Melbourne Exhibition Centre.
