Best cities in the world for multi-generational trips

Madrid, Spain.

Taking the top spot for the city that is the best for multi-generational trips is Madrid.

Family holidays are really having a revival post-pandemic, with research highlighting that more than 3 in 5 will take a holiday this year with their loved ones.

But from nature-loving Baby Boomers to cultural Gen Xers, foodie Millenials to bucket-list-seeking Gen Zers, finding a trip that all generations will enjoy is difficult – to say the least! So travel search engine Holidu has analysed cities around the world based on a range of factors that are important to each age group, finding out which destinations are the best for a multi-generational trip.

Best Cities In The World For Multi-Generational Trips
1) Madrid, Spain
2) Tokyo, Japan
3) New York, United States
4) Barcelona, Spain
5) Singapore, Singapore
6) Berlin, Germany
6) Paris, France
8) London, United Kingdom
9) Amsterdam, Netherlands
10) Chicago, United States

Taking the top spot for the city that is the best for multi-generational trips is Madrid. The Spanish capital scored well for a number of different factors including being home to 125 Michelin Guide restaurants, offering two of the ‘100 best National dishes around the world’ (Gambas Al Ajillo and Paella de Mariscos) and being very family-friendly, scoring an impressive 4 out of 5 for this.

Taking the silver medal position is Japan’s capital, Tokyo. Catering for all likes and dislikes, Tokyo offers a variety of different landscapes including urban cityscape, sandy beaches, covered forests and looming mountains. It offers something for everyone and is also not far at all from Japan’s highest peak, Mount Fuji, for any adrenaline junkies.

And rounding up the top three is one of the most famous cities in the world, New York. The American city is home to the most Michelin Guide restaurants in the world, with a staggering 512 to choose from. But if fine dining isn’t your thing, New York offers plenty of other things to see and do including two UNESCO World Heritage sites – The Statue of Liberty and the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright.

Anja Benson, Global PR & SEO Manager, said: "Something that many people missed out on over the last couple of years was quality family time. That, and really missing going on holiday, so it's not surprising that there has now been a rise in the popularity of multi-generational holidays. But with multiple generations comes multiple likes, and dislikes, and it can be really difficult to find a destination that suits everyone. That's why we thought it would be useful to find out which cities are the best for this kind of travel by analysing factors that different generations value, right from Michelin Guide restaurants to TikTok hashtag views.

"What's more, we also thought it would be helpful to look at each generation specifically because, let's be honest, your parents' cultural holiday that they took five years ago might not be somewhere you'd personally appreciate or want to visit. That's why we wanted to find out which city each generation would enjoy the most based on their own travel values."
