bmi regional launches new routes boosting connectivity in Europe and beyond

Airline adds new routes out of Munich to Italy, Sweden and Germany.

bmi regional is strengthening its position in Europe and building its global connections with the launch of three new routes from Munich available to book since February 17 2016. The three additional routes will increase the airline’s network from Munich to eight destinations.

The new flights to Milan Bergamo, Norrkoping and Rostock will operate in partnership with Lufthansa as code-share flights with joint BM and LH flight numbers. The flight schedule from each city has been tailored to ensure seamless travel connections for business and leisure travellers via Lufthansa’s worldwide Munich network of more than 200 destinations around the world.

bmi regional already has strong links with Munich thanks to its existing UK routes from Southampton and Bristol to the German city as well as its other European routes from Berne, Rotterdam and Brno to Munich, so the launch of the new routes add increased connectivity within its own network too.

Milan Bergamo – 2 x flights daily commence March 31, 2016
Located in northern Italy, Bergamo is a multi-faceted destination. The city is just 40km from Milan and 30km from the spectacularly serene and beautiful Lakes Como and Iseo. It’s also a gateway city to the Italian Alps.

The city itself is split into two sections, the older ‘Upper City’ and the more modern ‘Lower City’. The Upper City is surrounded by Venetian walls and features many historical attractions, museums and places of interest including the Citadel, Cathedral and Castle.

The ‘Lower City’ is defined as Bergamo’s business and residential district. Amongst the businesses based here are Italcementi, one of the world’s largest cement producers and UBI Group, an Italian banking group. The Lower City is also home to Bergamo’s shopping district, which is almost entirely located on one street.

Rostock – 6 x flights weekly commence March 31, 2016
The city of Rostock sits just seven miles from the Baltic Sea on the banks of the river Warnow; in summer the seaside resorts nearby are a fun and easy escape.  It’s one of the Hanseatic cities, a league of maritime trading centres that grouped together in the 15th century and as such has a rich history and charming architecture. So there are churches, city walls and pretty gabled houses to explore.

Business travellers visit the city thanks to its thriving shipbuilding and high-tech IT industries. Amongst the high profile businesses in the area are Caterpillar Inc, known for its production of diesel engines for ships, and wind turbine producer Nordex SE.

Norrkoping – 6 x flights weekly commence April 15, 2016
Nicknamed ‘Little Manchester’ thanks to its history of textile and paper production, Norrkoping once laid claim to producing 70% of all textiles made in Sweden. Today the city uses its location, by the mouth of the Motala Strom River, for more pleasurable purposes, having transformed the defunct canals and mills into stylish places to drink, dine and relax. Visitors can explore the city on foot or via the retro trams.

Other attractions include Visualization Center C, set up by Linkoping University, which showcases the latest scientific and technological advances in a highly interactive and visual way and is very engaging for all ages – and by way of contrast, Abackarna, a lovely trail in a beautiful natural setting that is close to the city centre but seems a world away.

Commenting on the expansion, Jochen Schnadt, Chief Commercial Officer said: “These three new routes, in addition to the recently announced Southampton – Munich route mark a step change for bmi regional, and establish us as a truly European brand with wings around the world. Like all existing bmi regional services to Frankfurt and Munich, these new routes will also be operated as code-share flights with our Partner Lufthansa.  Munich is now our largest hub in the heart of Europe with a total of eight routes and more than 160 weekly flights.  With this significant expansion increasing seats to and from Munich by more than 70% compared to last year our partnership with Lufthansa also grows, and, in doing so, connects us and our passengers to a wide range of global destinations. We are thrilled to be bringing our brand with its professional and reliable service to new audiences, both business and leisure. We’ll be offering great value fares and convenient travel times, thus positioning bmi regional as the perfect choice for travelling within Europe and beyond.”

Steffen Harbarth, Chief Commercial Officer Lufthansa Hub Munich & SVP
Marketing Lufthansa Group Airlines commented, “It’s great to be increasing the partnership with bmi regional and together expanding our route network even further. Bergamo, Rostock, Norkopping and Southampton are all important markets for Lufthansa. Our passengers can now quickly and easily transit via the award-winning Lufthansa hub in Munich to reach destinations worldwide.”

bmi regional and their strong commitment to our airport will directly impact on the success of the Bavarian aviation hub,” noted Andreas von Puttkamer, Senior Vice President Aviation at Munich Airport. “Passengers arriving in Munich will have the choice of a wide range of connecting flights to attractive destinations throughout the world. Equally passengers from our region will have quick and reliable access to other European destinations in addition to the major cities. We are delighted by the continued expansion of bmi regional’s network”.
