CCIB closes 2017 with revenue of 33.35m. euros and new record of 112 events hosted

The number of recurring events continues to grow, to 50% of the total and 58.35% of revenue, ensuring sustainable development of the centre’s activities in the future.

BARCELONA – The Barcelona International Convention Centre (CCIB) closed the last fiscal year with 473,210 attendees and a total of 122 events hosted, which is up 8.9% from the previous year and an all-time record, far surpassing the previous record of 113 events in 2014. Likewise, the CCIB revenue hit 33.35m. euros, the third best figure since it was inaugurated in 2004. Director General Marc Rodriguez says, “We consider these figures highly satisfactory and we reaffirm our commitment to a management model clearly focused on the quality of our services and the satisfaction of our clients.”

Internationalisation and loyalisation are key
The number of recurring events (meaning those that are held more than once at the CCIB) continued to increase in 2017, hitting 50% of the total and 58.35% of revenue, a figure that shows the further strengthened trust of organisers. Plus, in line with previous years, international events made up 42% of the total for the year and 87.7% of overall revenue. These two factors show a solid upward trend for the coming years.

These figures illustrate the consolidation of a successful business model that is clearly orientated towards client satisfaction and service, but also firmly committed to respect for the environment and improving society around it. Good proof of this business practice can be seen in the two awards received in 2017: the gold M&IT award for Best International Convention Centre, granted to a Spanish centre for the first time ever by British professionals in the sector, on top of the silver and bronze the centre has won in previous years; and the Barcelona Sustainable Tourism award for Good Practices in Social Sustainability, from Turismo de Barcelona in the first edition of these awards, recognising CCIB’s support for the inclusive, multicultural, values-based children’s indoor football project through Foundation Trinijove.

Varied activities, with special focus on medicine and technology
In terms of congresses, the CCIB remains the benchmark venue for large international events in medicine and science. In 2017, ECCO (6,300 experts in Digestive Medicine), ESOT (3,500 experts in transplants), ICN (8,000 experts in Nursing) and Euretina (4,900 experts in Ophthalmology) were the congresses with the highest registration.

Regarding corporate events, it is worth noting the sixth consecutive edition of the Gartner Itxpo Symposium held at the CCIB. This is one of the most important meetings of IT analysts in the world, with 9,500 attendees (up 17% from 2016), surpassing all expectations and becoming the largest convention the centre has hosted. KingfoMarket (1,600 attendees), CineEurope (2,000 attendees) and Eurofinance (2,100 attendees) were other significant events that once again chose the CCIB as their venue in 2017.

The Forum Auditorium consolidated its position as a venue on the city’s cultural and, above all, musical scene with a total of 16 shows hosted, including noteworthy national and international figures like Miguel Bose, Ara Malikian, Diana Krall and Sweet California, among others. The space also hosted the Gaudi Awards ceremony, organised by the Catalan Academy of Cinema, for the second year in a row. The technical characteristics also proved to be perfect for hosting symphonic concerts with projected images, like Final Fantasy, Zelda and Disney.

Fair organisers also continued choosing the CCIB for its versatility and the flexibility of its facilities. Advanced Factories (9,000 attendees), Architect@Work (2,300 attendees), Security Forum (3,000 attendees), InteriHotel (4,500 attendees) and Magic (9,000 attendees) were the fairs with the most visitors in 2017.
