Copa Airlines celebreates five years of connecting Denver with Latin America and the Carribean

Service to Panama City, Panama was inaugurated on December 11, 2017, at Denver International Airport.

DENVER – On Sunday, Copa Airlines, a subsidiary of Copa Holdings, S.A. and a member of the global Star Alliance airline network, celebrates five years of providing nonstop service from Denver International Airport (DEN). The carrier inaugurated service to DEN on December 11, 2017, with flights to Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport (PTY), designated by the carrier as the Hub of the Americas.

“We enthusiastically celebrate this historic milestone with our partner Copa Airlines,” said Denver Mayor Michael B. Hancock. “Copa’s service has directly benefitted Denver’s economy by providing convenient access to the growing region of Latin America, facilitating the exchange of commerce and culture, and creating jobs for Denver residents.”

Today, Copa Airlines offers Denver travelers the only nonstop flights to the Central America nation of Panama. Upon landing at Copa’s Hub of the Americas, Denver-originating passengers can connect to more than 50 destinations across the Caribbean, Central and South America. Copa Airlines is a member of the Star Alliance, and DEN is home to the largest hub for Copa’s Star Alliance partner United Airlines.

“As DEN works to expand our global connections, we value our partnership with Copa Airlines,” said DEN CEO Phil Washington. “Copa Airlines provides access from Denver to dozens of destinations across Latin America and the Caribbean. Convenient connections at Panama City’s Tocumen International Airport have further opened a significant portion of the globe for DEN.”

In addition to celebrating five years of DEN service in 2022, Copa Airlines also celebrates its 75th year of operation this year.  Since inaugurating flights in December 2017, Copa Airlines has carried more than 170,000 passengers on more than 1,300 flights at DEN.  Copa Airlines did cease DEN service during some months in 2020 and 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but in recent months the airline has exceeded 2019 passenger volumes.

“We are very proud of our last five years of operations out of Denver International Airport. We are providing a travel gateway to more than fifty-five Latin America and Caribbean cities,” said David DeFossey, Regional Commercial Manager – North America at Copa Airlines. “We thank the authorities at Denver International Airport and all our partners and local communities for trusting Copa Airlines to serve as the bridge that connects Denver travelers with friends, families, and businesses throughout the Americas.”
