Counties with the most travel during Thanksgiving

AdvisorSmith’s newest study on the “Counties That Traveled the Most During Thanksgiving”.

With the second wave of coronavirus affecting the nation, the CDC recommended people avoid unnecessary travel during Thanksgiving week to help stop the virus's spread. Business insurance company AdvisorSmith analyzed which U.S. counties had the most people who traveled over 100 miles from home during Thanksgiving week per capita using anonymized mobile device data. From our research, we discovered that:

  • Residents of Wyoming, South Dakota, New Mexico, Kansas, and Iowa took the most Thanksgiving trips over 100 miles. In contrast, residents of Hawaii, DC, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and New Hampshire traveled the least.
  • Nationwide, Americans took an average of 3.3 long-distance trips per 100 people during Thanksgiving week.
  • Residents of small counties with populations between 10,000 and 25,000 took the most long-distance trips per capita. The average number of trips in small counties was almost double the nationwide average.

Here is a list of the counties with the most travelers:
