Delta adds Rome flight from Minneapolis-St. Paul

New route marks Delta's fifth long-haul international destination from Minneapolis hub.

MINNEAPOLIS – Twin Cities, meet the Eternal City: Delta Air Lines is adding nonstop daily service from its Minneapolis-St. Paul hub to Rome during the peak summer season beginning May 26, 2016.

Rome will be Delta’s fifth long-haul international destination from Minneapolis-St. Paul and the 10th peak-day flight between the U.S. and Italy for summer 2016. The airline also operates flights from Minneapolis to Amsterdam, London, Tokyo-Narita and Paris. The service will be operated in conjunction with Delta’s joint venture partners Air France, KLM and Alitalia using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.

“With the investments in our facilities and the addition of Rome service, our partnership with the MSP market is strong,” said Bob Cortelyou, Delta’s Senior Vice President – Network Planning. “We look forward to partnering with the community and the airport authority to meet the growing needs of our customers in the Twin Cities.”

“We are very excited about Delta Air Lines’ decision to launch service to Rome,” said Jeff Hamiel, executive director and chief executive officer of the Metropolitan Airports Commission, which owns and operates Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. “Rome is one of Europe’s oldest cities, with tremendous historical, cultural and commercial appeal. It is also the most popular destination in Europe not to already have direct service from MSP International Airport. Direct service to Rome gives businesses, colleges and civic organizations in Minnesota another opportunity to attract visitors from the Mediterranean region of Europe.”

Service between Minneapolis-St. Paul and Rome will feature a full range of premium products, including full flat-bed seats with direct aisle access and a range of regionally inspired dining options in the Delta One cabin as well as Westin Heavenly Inflight Bedding and Tumi amenity kits. Customers flying in Delta Comfort+ benefit from up to four additional inches of legroom and up to 50 percent more recline than Delta’s standard international Main Cabin seats as well as Sky Priority boarding. Throughout the aircraft, all passengers will have access to on-demand in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi enabling customers to stay connected at 30,000 feet.

Delta operates more than 400 peak-day flights to more than 120 destinations from Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport. Delta has invested more than $25 million to update restaurants featuring world-class cuisine, gate-house dining and iPads for customer use and ordering in concourse G. Delta has also made renovations to its Delta Sky Club on concourse F and offers Sky Priority services and gate area power recharging stations.

Delta Adds Two Trans-Atlantic Flights from Midwest Hubs
Delta Air Lines will also boost its trans-Atlantic route portfolio with two new routes from its Midwest hubs next summer. The airline will operate daily flights from Minneapolis-St. Paul to Rome, as well as six weekly flights from Detroit to Munich beginning May 26, 2016. The service will be operated in conjunction with Delta’s joint venture partners Air France, KLM and Alitalia.

In all, Delta will offer five new routes across the Atlantic beginning next summer: Detroit to Munich; Minneapolis-St. Paul to Rome; New York-JFK to Edinburgh, Scotland; Salt Lake City to London-Heathrow; and Raleigh-Durham to Paris-Charles de Gaulle.

“Our five new routes will complement our returning seasonal service for a full summer of trans-Atlantic flying in 2016,” said Dwight James, Delta’s Senior Vice President – Trans-Atlantic. “Detroit to Munich is important for our corporate customers, while Minneapolis-St. Paul to Rome is a strong addition to our existing hub service from Rome. Our customers can expect premium amenities and the best service in their travels across the Atlantic with Delta.”

Detroit-Munich will be Delta’s second daily flight between the U.S. and Munich as well as the second daily flight between the Motor City and Germany. Delta serves four destinations in Germany – Dusseldorf, Frankfurt, Munich and Stuttgart. The flight will be operated using Boeing 767-400ER aircraft and will offer one-stop connecting service to Munich for many customers in destinations throughout the Midwest and Pacific Northwest.

Rome will be Delta’s fifth long-haul international destination from Minneapolis-St. Paul and 10th peak-day flight between the U.S. and Italy in summer 2016. The flight will be operated using Boeing 767-300ER aircraft.

Customers on both flights will enjoy a full range of premium products, including full flat-bed seats with direct aisle access and a range of dining options in the Delta One cabin as well as Westin Heavenly Inflight Bedding and Tumi amenity kits. Customers flying in Delta Comfort+ benefit from up to four additional inches of legroom and up to 50 percent more recline than Delta’s Main Cabin seats, as well as Sky Priority boarding. Throughout the aircraft, all passengers will have access to on-demand in-flight entertainment and Wi-Fi.
