Delta Air Lines celebrates its 70th anniversary at MIA

Delta Air Lines began service at Miami International Airport on December 1, 1945, making it the longest-serving airline at the airport.

MIAMI – Delta Air Lines commemorated its 70th anniversary at Miami International Airport on December 1 with a celebration at the airport for passengers and employees. Miami-Dade Aviation Department Chief of Staff Joseph F. Napoli and Delta Air Lines Vice President James Sarvis addressed the event attendees and joined them for refreshments, calypso music and a commemorative cake. A gallery of vintage Delta photos was also on display for event participants.

Delta Air Lines began service at MIA on December 1, 1945, making it the longest-serving airline at the airport. The inaugural flight 70 years ago from Miami to Chicago aboard a Douglas DC-3 carried only 21 passengers. Today, Delta serves nearly 2.5 million passengers annually at MIA.

“We are proud to celebrate the longevity and significant contributions that Delta has made in our community,” said Miami-Dade Aviation Director Emilio T. Gonzalez. “As our longest serving airline, we are honored to have so many past and present employees here to celebrate this historic milestone.”
