With the Petrol Retailer’s Association reporting potential increases in fuel of 5p per litre in the UK and abroad, it is evident that these costs can make a hole in a holidaymakers’ budget. This comprehensive guide compares the prices for unleaded petrol and diesel fuel across 25 of the most popular destinations for UK tourists, including France, Portugal, Dubai and the USA.

When it comes to driving abroad, the price per litre of unleaded petrol can vary greatly depending on the destination. Travellers looking for cheap fuel prices should head to Oman where the price of unleaded petrol stands at just £0.25ppl. Other destinations with low prices include £0.30ppl in Dubai, £0.81ppl in India or £0.89ppl in Japan. Although, when travelling in Britain’s neighbouring countries, holidaymakers can expect to pay £1.21ppl in Spain, £1.35ppl in the Irish Republic, £1.44ppl in Greece, and a staggering £1.50ppl in Italy.

With regards to diesel prices, Russia is found to charge the least at only £0.70ppl whilst those travelling to Australia can expect to pay £0.92ppl. For drivers venturing to nearby Europe, the price of diesel jumps to £1.25ppl in the Netherlands and £1.39ppl in Italy however the most expensive cost per litre was found to be in Turkey, at £1.56ppl.

The research also highlights the disparity between what motorists pay for diesel and for unleaded petrol in Europe, as well as the rest of world. In most countries such as Greece and Hong Kong, diesel is still 27p and 37p a litre cheaper than unleaded petrol. In China, it is 3p cheaper and in Ireland 8p, whereas in the UK motorists can expect to pay an extra 5p per litre for diesel. Dubai is the other exception to the rule with the price of diesel costing around 31p more.
