150 mil. euros for Romania’s airports infrastructure

The Ministry of Transport submitted a request to the European Commission to be granted financial support worth EUR 150 mil. through the Transport Sectorial Operational Program, POST for infrastructure projects regarding traffic safety on airports with a traffic lower than 1 million passenger per year.

In order to be allocated the funds, airports must submit projects which can not exceed EUR 40 mil.

Catalin Radu, the General Manager of the Civil Aviation Division within the Ministry of Transport, stated that most airports have already developed the projects, and the Ministry developed the Applicant’s Guide, currently the draft version. Although the total value of eligible projects will exceed EUR 150 mil., the ministry will try to supplement the funds from other POST projects where the sources were not spent, said Catalin Radu.

Radu also stated that he will travel to Brussels next week to discuss with European Union officials and the answer from the Commission is expected within a few weeks.

These are the first projects of the airline sector benefiting of funds from the European Union. Road and railway projects had priority until now.

There are 16 airports in Romania, of which 4 are administered by the Ministry of Transport. Out of the 16 airports, only Otopeni airport in Bucharest registers passengers’ traffic over 1 mil. passengers / year.
