Agents should encourage value-conscious holidaymakers to look at alternatives to flying

Agents with customers looking to avoid being stung by the rise in Air Passenger Duty (APD) that comes in to effect, are being encouraged to sell alternative methods of travel that don’t involve flying – and are better for the environment.

Coach Tourism Council (CTC), the industry body representing coach holiday companies around the UK, says the increase in APD underlines the value of booking a tour by coach, especially within the UK to neighbouring European countries.

“Consumers are so used to flying that they forget there are other viable options of holidaying, which are better value for money and kinder to the environment ” says Chris Wales, Chief Executive, Coach Tourism Council.

“Agents should promote travelling by coach as an excellent value-for-money alternative. It’s a more comfortable and less stressful journey, especially with recent increases in airport security. Additionally, coach packages do not incur hidden taxes and travelling by coach is a much greener form of transport*.”

Seven million people are expected to take a coach tour in the UK in 2010 with more than 1.5 million going on an escorted tour to Europe.

New touring coaches cost upwards of £250,000 and feature reclining seats, air conditioning, double glazed windows and on board facilities. Unseen elements are quiet cabins and a smooth ride. Many operators now have coaches that cost much more and feature club class style leather seats with extra legroom, drop down DVD screens, toilet facilities and even kitchens.
