The Athens Hoteliers Union (EXA) has branded the Greek capital an `inhospitable town`, referring to the state of its infrastructure, public transport system and traffic problems.

The organisation is concerned at what they consider a negative image of Athens being portrayed just a few years ahead of its hosting of the Olympic Games.

EXA president Spiros Divanis said recently that despite all the modernisation efforts being undertaken by hoteliers, who have invested some 80 billion drachmas over the past three years and renewed some 8,000 rooms, these works alone could not change the view of the city.

He said that the Athens municipality, and other councils around the country, persistently fail to fulfil their responsibilities.

In comparing Athens with Sydney, Divanis said the latter city had established convention and exhibition centres, top services and advanced means of transport as well as ran effective promotions.

He pointed out that despite the government`s focus on a perceived high demand for four- and five-star accommodation, there would be significant demand for hotels of lower categories.
