Athens International Airport the first Hellenic company to receive the European Commission’s GreenLight Award for the implementation of a series of preventive maintenance activities and energy efficient measures  in lighting, thus reducing emissions that are related to the greenhouse effect.

The European Commission Directorate General Energy & Transport launched GreenLight, a Voluntary Programme, in February 2000. Private and public organisations (186 participations until 2004) commit towards the European Commission to reduce their lighting energy use. The GreenLight award ceremony was held yesterday, Thursday, November 18th, at the Adminsitration Building of Athens International Airport. The GreenLight representatives in Greece, Mr. Ilias Sofronis and Mrs Lena Lambropoulou, presented the award to AIA’s Chief Corporate Services Officer, Mr. Yiannis Tsapalas, who underlined the airport’s commitment for continuous contribution to the protection of the environment and to the efective use of energy, by undertaking new initiatives and a series of pioneer works.
