British tourists flocked to the Halkidiki<.> peninsula, in northern Greece last summer, their numbers up 30% compared to the corresponding 1999 period.

Halkidiki hoteliers union chairman Makis Athanasopoulos said 100,000 UK arrivals were recorded and 1.1 million overnights at a time when there was an overall increase of 3% in the number of British visitors to Greece.

Halkidiki became very popular in the UK, mostly due to an expansion in the number of packages offered by tour operators, said Athanasopoulos, adding, Britons consider Halkidiki a seaside paradise.

During the recent World Travel Market fair in London, he met with several British tour operators in an effort to lengthen the tourist season from mid-April to the end of October.

It`s vital that we retain our reputation for high quality at a time when there is great pressure for a drop in accommodation rates, especially for last-minute bookings, Athanasopoulos noted.
