The 16th Edition of the Bolsa de Turismo de Lisboa (Lisbon Tourism Exchange), which ran from 21 to 25 of this month, was the outcome of the combined efforts of the AIP/FIL (Associacao Industrial Portuguesa/Feira Internacional de Lisboa), ICEP (Investimentos, Comercio e Turismo de Portugal), and other collaborating organizations, and those of the CTP (Confederacao do Turismo Portugues) and ANRET (Associacao Nacional das Regioes de Turismo).

A Departure Point for the World was the slogan for the BTL, with its 881 exhibitors (564 from Portugal and 317 from abroad), numbers which help to boost its image as the country`s biggest Tourism Fair with an international projection. This year`s edition was further distinguished by the considerable attendance and satisfaction of firms from the Gulf region, a slice of success to be continued in future editions.

The BTL 2004 did more than welcome the presence of new countries – Timor, Bulgaria, Costa Rica and the Czech Republic – it was also a pleasure to salute the return of Greece and Guinea-Bissau.

The customary strong presence of Brazil and Spain lent deserved prominence to the international pavilion.

Attention should be drawn to the trade component, and so the first day and part of the second and third days were reserved for professionals from the sector. This made it possible to provide an atmosphere better suited to carrying on business, and thus encouraging the promotion of the quality and scope of products / services offered by Portugal`s tourism industry.

Visitor numbers exceeded expectations, as borne out by the fact that the 52 402 visitors to BTL 2004 corresponds to an increase of 11.9% in relation to the 2003 edition.

In addition to the exhibition area, the cultural entertainment areas further enhanced the reputation of the Fair. There were performances by regional dance and singing groups from Portugal and other countries, not to mention the regular gastronomy area, featuring the attractive traditional tasquinhas and their authentic regional dishes.

The BTL/2005 will take place from 19 to 23 January, at FIL, in the Parque das Nacoes.
