The number of overnights tourists spent at hotels in Athens, Thessaloniki, Corfu, Rhodes, Halkidiki and Crete in October rose by 14.04 percent compared to the same period last year, according to government figures. The national statistics service surveyed 273 hotels – or 60 percent of all accommodation available – in these areas and found that the October 1999 figure increased by 1,710,121 from 1,499,552 in 1998. Average occupancy rates grew from 57.53 percent to 65.6 percent.
Between April and October this year, 14,818,706 overnights were recorded, up from 14,165,672 for the same period last year – a rise of 4.61 percent.
Average occupancy rates over the seven months was 80.57 percent, up from 77.02 percent.
The statistics service found that charter
The rise seen in the period April-October 1999 was more modest, at 14.44 percent. Arrivals totalled 4,614,634 – up from 4,032,210.
