The Greek diaspora of the Australian city of Melbourne , home to the largest number of Greek speakers outside Thessaloniki, continues to register  its opposition to Olympic Airways’ cancellation of its direct Athens-Melbourne flight.
The Melbourne-based publication Nea Patrida recently featured an interview with Paul Gibrick, a member of OA’s administrative staff in Athens, who said that the decision is final and irreversible.
Direct flights to Melbourne will cease in late March though OA travellers will be able to reach the capital of Victoria via Sydney aboard domestic carriers Qantas Airlines or Ansett Airlines at no extra charge.
Meanwhile, Athens-based private carrier Cronus Airlines has applied for a licence permitting it to undertake the route. The airline has also sent a letter to the president of the Greek community of Melbourne inviting members of the diaspora to participate, with a 49 percent stake, in a Cronus subsidiary.
OA’s decision to cancel the flight because it is deemed unprofitable has prompted air stewards to call a 24-hour strike for March 26, the day the route will cease operating.
