Traffic officials reported that this year’s mass Easter exodus was one of the largest in the recent years, while many dwellers in Athens extended their Easter Holidays till Sunday of Thomas, or April 22, 2001. Some 500,000 automobile trafficked out of Athens alone to the more rural parts of Greece, while at least 80,000 travelers chose to go by ferry. Traffic police implemented extra measures to facilitate the mass departure of Athenians and residents of other major urban centers despite the unfavorable weather.
Nonetheless, at least 17 people lost their lives in road accidents while some 279 were injured.
