Greece`s Ministry of Public works, Town Planning and Environment, in a press briefing recently, announced that the government is planning to hold an inauguration ceremony for the new Athens airport at Spata Eleftherios Venizelos<.> on March 27. Only one day later, the first official day of operation will be celebrated. The new airport, east of Athens, is going to begin operating full-steam at 15:00 on March 28, with only landings scheduled for planes set to take off the next day (March 29), and starting at 06:00. The current Athens airport, is to stop operating on March 28 at 00:00. Following this, and in accordance with the governments plans, the land in and around the Hellenikon Airport will be transformed into a large park, which in 2004 will host a multitude of events for the Olympic Games. Thus, all facilities will terminate in February 2002.
