Europe takes further action towards the Single European Sky

The European Commission adopted new rules for more interoperability between air traffic management (ATM) systems in Europe. This aims to set common technical and procedural rules and thereby remove barriers to the harmonised use of ATM systems as EC argues. The new legislation complement two Regulations adopted last year in order to modernise air traffic management systems within the Single European Sky.



Vice-President Jacques Barrot, Commissioner for Transport said: “This legal instrument is another milestone in the implementation of the Single Sky, as it supports the coordinated introduction of a new technical solution in air traffic management systems throughout Europe.”



The new Regulation on `flight message transfer protocol` will allow the use of internet protocol in communication systems between air traffic control units. These communication systems support the coordination procedures between air traffic control units, as laid down in the `coordination and transfer` Regulation[1], and between air traffic services units and controlling military units, in line with the ‘flexible use of airspace’ Regulation[2].
