Glasgow Airport lands new flights to Spain, Portugal

Glasgow Airport has landed more flights for 2009 after a major holiday company announced plans to launch new sunshine holidays to Spain and Portugal. Manchester based Sunways Holidays is to offer flights, and holiday packages, to Girona, Alicante, Gran Canaria, Palma, Lanzarote and Faro, boosting the number of seats available from Glasgow next year by almost 25,000.

Flights to Girona will operate twice a week during the peak season, while Alicante, Gran Canaria, Palma, Lanzarote and Faro will be served weekly. The company will charter from one of the UK’s largest carriers, bmi, using Airbus A320/A319  aircraft.

Felipe Rodriguez, Managing Director and founder of Sunways Holidays, said: "Sunways Holidays have always had a loyal following of Scottish customers. We felt that with the demise of Seguro Holidays and XL Airways there was a demand in Scotland for good value holidays to popular destinations. I would like to take the opportunity to welcome Richard Burke, ex Seguro, to Sunways Holidays for this new and exciting venture. His experience in the Scottish market will assist Sunways to expand further from Scotland."

Richard Burke, Commercial Director of Sunways Holidays, said: "We are really excited about our new programme from Glasgow Airport. We are delighted to be working in partnership with bmi, one of the UK’s most respected airlines, and look forward to flying from Glasgow. We have a packed programme for 2009, including a great choice of popular destinations across Spain and Portugal. We include Self Catering to All Inclusive properties, from 2 star to 5 star all available at low prices, direct from Glasgow. Sunways will also feature a popular long stay programme to Portugal and Costa Brava with 28, 35 and 42 night stays."

Glasgow Airport Managing Director Amanda McMillan added: "We are delighted to welcome Sunways Holidays to Scotland, and we wish them every success with their 2009 programme. This is further good news for Glasgow Airport and shows that, despite the current economic climate, it is still possible to attract new business."
