Greece popular with Scandinavians

Greece has overtaken Spain as the most popular travel destination for Scandinavian tourists during the summer season. Some 1.3 million Scandinavians, half of them from Sweden, enjoyed holidays in Greece last year, practically all arriving by charter flights. And the total keeps increasing. In addition to sun, sea, culture and adventure, Scandinavians are attracted to Greece because of `island hopping`, according to Charalambos Lianeris, director of EOT office in Stockholm. `It is very easy to explore two or three islands during one holiday`, Lianeris suggests.

The EOT had a fine representation at the TUR 2000<.>, the annual Swedish International Travel & Tourism Trade Fair held in Gothenburg. Others who were represented by a stand included the island of Mykonos, the regions of Macedonia and northern Aegean, and Superfast Ferries, which started operating in the Baltic this year.

This year`s TUR2000 travel trade fair was the largest and best attended in its sixteen-year history.
