It seems as if the groundbreaking ceremonies of several prominent hotel units around the Attica area will have to wait for a while since the issue is apparently still in the air. According to sources, government officials have been overwhelmed with too many applications from various hotel groups and they have not yet decided which groups will obtain authorization for construction.
Last week the government stated that it has only 55 petitions for building permits but two months ago the Ministry of Development had mentioned that some 83 applications submitted. Nevertheless, the hotels, once constructed, will all be of A` Category and contain about 8,000 rooms. The government on its part, and for no sound reason, every week includes a deadline for submission of application, this time it is February 21, 2001.
And while the issue is still in the air, industry circles reveal that companies such as the Astir Vouliagmenis group, along with the King George Hotel, the Hilton, Ledra Marriot, the Elektra Hotel, as well as several other prominent companies, will probably be the favored groups to expand their activities.
