Half of single cruisers over 50 ‘cruise for love’

A new study conducted by an independent cruise comparison website has revealed that, of those singletons over the age of 50 years old who have recently been on a cruise, over half did so with the hope of finding romance.

It seems that holidays are not only a form of relaxation for the older generations, as a new study from an independent cruise comparison website has revealed that, of the singletons over the age of 50 who have been on a cruise in the past 5 years, over half did so in the hope of finding love onboard.

The study, conducted by CruiseCompare.co.uk, polled 1, 021 single people aged 50 and over, who had been on a cruise in the past 5 years. The study aimed to look more into the cruising habits of over – 50s, and the motivations that lie behind choosing a cruise holiday.

Respondents to the study who had been on a cruise in the past 5 years were initially asked to explain why they chose a cruise holiday. The majority, 53%, explained that they went on a cruise with the ‘hope of finding love;’ whilst one in five, 19%, did so in order to ‘visit several different places on one holiday.’ One in ten, 11%, chose a cruise holiday in order to ‘make friends’ onboard.

Of the respondents who cruised ‘with the hope of finding love;’ two fifths, 42%, explained that they did so as they believed cruises to be ‘a good place to meet new people;’ whilst 28% explained that they had heard that cruises were popular with single people.

Furthermore, of those who went on a cruise with the hope of finding love, 17% admitted to getting involved in a romantic relationship whilst on the holiday. However, just 6% of those relationships continued the romance once they returned home.

The majority, 48%, of those over- 50 who went on a cruise to ‘find love’ went alone; whilst 32% went with another single friend. The remaining respondents went on a cruise with a group of friends/ family members.

Total respondents to the study were also asked about what type of relationships they developed on board, aside from any romantic ones. 69% of the respondents admitted that they built friendships whilst on their cruising holiday, 19% of which have been maintained whilst at home.

Danielle Fear, managing director of CruiseCompare.co.uk, had the following to say: “Cruises are certainly a great place to meet new people and to form romantic relationships. Unlike a traditional holiday, cruises allow people to form friendships more easily, as you are all experiencing the same holiday for the same length of time. Although there are many different varieties of fun to have on a cruise liner, it is common for friendship groups to form and then spend the remainder of the holiday together.”

She continued, “I wasn’t surprised to see the amount of people who go on cruise holidays with the hope of finding love. In fact, there are cruises designed specifically for single people with hope of finding romance, and they are a great option for anyone looking for love on holiday. CruiseCompare.co.uk is a great way to find the ideal cruise and the ideal price, and we aim to supply each individual with their dream cruise; whatever their holiday needs.”
