LEROS. Leros<.>` development as a tourist destination was discussed by travel agents and journalists who were flown to the island by private carrier Hellenic Star to attend a recent seminar.

Leros Mayor Yiannis Antartis looked at the island`s infrastructure and upgrading works that have taken place. He referred to the water supply system, a dam still under construction and a new port that will facilitate the link with nearby Kalymnos.

However, the island, which has 3,500 tourist beds, faces problems with its airport as it is incapable of hosting international scheduled flights. Local authorities say there is a great need for a new international airport as air passengers must pass through Kos or Kalymnos in order to reach Leros.

Hoteliers cooperate with leading tour operators but would like to increase the number of domestic visitors. Leros is seen as ideal for religious trips, marine tourism and conferences, particularly considering that it has a 250-seat convention centre housed in a traditional building.
