Thirty-seven percent of small businesses in the UK are boosting their business success by attracting custom from new national and international markets through the Internet.

While many companies limit their business reach to their local high street, a recent UK online for business survey shows one of the key benefits for companies which are doing business online is the access it gives to wider audiences, enabling them to overcome traditional barriers such as distance, nationality and time zones.

Other key benefits cited in the survey included improved efficiency and time saving with 32% of companies in the region stating e-commerce improved business performance in this area.

Stephen Timms, Minister for E-Commerce, comments:

This survey shows how businesses of all sizes are seeing the returns on investment in their e-commerce strategy and gaining a real competitive edge. The Internet enables companies to reach a wider customer base and grow their business, showing that information and communication technologies (ICT) are vital for every company.

In addition, the results show that companies are integrating ICT to improve overall business performance – new technologies are helping businesses improve relationships with both their customers and suppliers and therefore enhancing the way we do business everyday.

The survey was conducted on this year’s E-Commerce Awards web site. Now in their fourth year, the Awards, set up by UK online for business and Interforum, celebrate and reward organisations who are successfully using e-commerce, new technologies or the Internet to improve their business. This year the Awards attracted a record-breaking 1,683 entries.

The research is based on findings from an online survey run on the UK online for business E-Commerce Award web site between April and June 2002. 1038 businesses across UK with less than 250 employees completed the survey.
