The Lufthansa lounges at the largest German hub in Frankfurt as of now offer passengers the most modern Internet technology. Together with Vodafone D2, Lufthansa has equipped its seven lounges at Rhein-Main Airport with the fast and wireless Internet access Wireless LAN. At the start of the service in Frankfurt, Wolfgang Mayrhuber, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of German Lufthansa AG, announced the equipping of all 55 lounges at 30 final destinations worldwide: `The added value for our passengers is the focal point of all our technological developments. Fast information and reliable communications have become an important competitive edge in the age of global economic relations, particularly for business travellers. Lufthansa is now offering its passengers a service which makes the lounges worldwide into mobile offices.` He emphasized that Lufthansa has always been a leader in technological developments and with Lufthansa Technik is itself a research and development operation.

Only a few days ago, following a successful test run of several months Lufthansa announced plans to equip its complete long-haul fleet with broadband Internet access. In January Lufthansa had become the first airline company worldwide to start testing realtime Internet access on board. `With Wireless LAN in the lounges and Internet on board, Lufthansa offers optimal conditions for communication, during the complete journey`, according to Mayrhuber. He added that technological superiority is an important challenge for the future of Lufthansa: `Pioneering spirit and innovative strength are important pillars of our success. Investments in product quality, therefore, are investments for our passengers and in the future of Lufthansa.`

Special advantages of the new service in Frankfurt are the wireless connection of mobile computers and the quick Internet access with up to multiple ISDN speed. The reception and sending of e-mails – even with extensive attached files – as well as access to the company Intranet via a Virtual Private Network (VPN) offer passengers new and additional facilities for their communication. Thus, the lounges will be transformed into comfortable communication centers, in which the passengers can make a choice between the use of information offers, work opportunities, entertainment and relaxation.

In the meantime, Wireless LAN is proven and reliable. The user simply needs a conventional WLAN board which is already integrated into many newer models. When opening the browser window, the free Lufthansa portal page appears automatically. From there the passengers reach the Lufthansa and Vodafone-D2 service offer. Initially the new service will be free-of-charge within the context of a test phase. This will continue to be the case subsequently for the use of all Lufthansa Internet pages. In Germany, customers will then merely pay a flat rate for time irrespective of the amount of data transmitted. Vodafone-D2 customers can pay for the connections via their D2 mobile telephone invoice. The customers of other mobile telephone suppliers also will be able to use Vodafone D2`s WLAN offer. They will pay by credit card or via the credit in their Miles & More accounts. In total, Lufthansa and Vodafone D2 have already equipped 13 lounges in Germany. The new high-tech standard is at the passengers` disposal in Frankfurt, Berlin, Dusseldorf and Hamburg.
