The island republic of Malta<.> is gaining popularity as a holiday destination not only for Europeans in general, but for Greeks. This year as many as 14.000 from Greece are expected to enjoy a visit there this year, according to statistics of Air Malta, which provides air service between the two countries. Last year there were some 11.000 from Greece.

The most popular area is that of St. Julian`s, which has a concentration of four and five stars hotels, including new Radisson and Hilton hotels. St. Julian`s is also noted for its night time entertainment facilities.

Greeks, who average four-five day stays, are among the better spenders, according to Jean-Marc Camilleri, manager of Air Malta for Greece. Greeks, concentrate their visits during the summer, the Christmas and Easter holiday periods as well as long weekends.

Overall, the tourist traffic number to Malta, which has a total area of 122 square miles and a population of under 350,000, are anticipated to be as high as two million visitors this year, half of whom are from the United Kingdom. Germany is a close second source of tourists.

Some 6,000 new hotel beds are programmed to be available during the next 18 months. Under a new ruling three star and less hotels are not obligated to operate a restaurant on their premises.

International meeting in Malta have been developing, with new facilities including at least one unusual site, a former medieval hospital. One major incentive program from Greece has 600 people this August for a five day stay. A special promotion campaign to attract more meetings is being formulated.
