A recent survey by lifestyle and travel social networking site WAYN.com has found that Mediterranean holidays are still among the most popular holidays with holidaymakers. The results of the WAYN European Travel Survey, which questioned 6500 travellers worldwide, put each country into different categories, such as top ten romantic and top ten cultural destinations – with some of the Med’s most famous countries taking the top spots in several categories.

Richard Bray of online travel specialists Travelmatch says: “Holidays to the Mediterranean have been popular for many years, and travel surveys like this are a great way for experienced and novice travellers alike to give their views on some of Europe’s most recognisable destinations, and give unbiased feedback to potential holidaymakers. So if people are looking for other tourists’ experiences of holidays to France they can quickly check France’s ranking in a number of carefully chosen classifications, and make their decision based on their holiday needs.”

While France did score highly in many of the poll’s categories, including coming 4th in the top ten most popular European destinations, some very familiar holiday destinations also scored highly in some of the survey’s more specialised categories. While Spain, Greece and the UK regularly made the top five, Italy came first in several categories, including friendliest people, best gastronomic destination, and best cultural destination.

Bray continues: “While this survey did take into consideration the many factors that people consider when booking a well-earned break, the unwavering popularity of holidays to Italy with both seasoned and novice travellers is impressive. Although several other European countries also score highly in this survey, the Mediterranean seems to be held in high regard by users of the WAYN website, and the results of this poll can only lead to more bookings for holidays to the region.”
