More Brits escape UK for an active Christmas experience

More and more people trading in the trifle for travel and are escaping the UK for more far flung regions over the Christmas period

More and more people trading in the trifle for travel and are escaping the UK for more far flung regions over the Christmas period, said a leading specialist tour operator.

Waymark Holidays, which runs cross country skiing and other snow experience tours in the winter, said bookings for their Christmas trips continue to rise every year, prompting them to add extra departures to their programme.

Managing director Neil Saunders said people increasingly want a unique way of spending the festive season, and many of their tours get right into the festive spirit as a result.

With their claim to Santa Claus, reindeers and snow all around, Norway is probably the most festive places you could be at Christmas, and guides and guests alike get right into the spirit of it, he said.

Guides will replace their ski suits with Santa Suits and most of the guests can be spotted with their reindeer antlers or santa hats. Then of course there`s a huge Christmas dinner and plenty of festivities, so it`s no wonder it`s one of our most popular times.

The popularity of their Christmas-time tours has prompted Waymark Holidays to add new Christmas and New Year departures on their Quatretondeta walking tour in Spain with a particularly festive itinerary.

Walking is varied with plenty of routes to choose from including gorges, peaks, ridges, rock pinnacles, broad forest tracks, ancient Moorish trails, rough paths or even mountain scrambling if you feel so inclined, while on Christmas day there will be a special Spanish celebratory dinner.

Cross country skiing trips in Norway run over Christmas this year include a seven night grade one and two trip at Rondaplassen, ideal for beginners. Skiing is on gentle tracks on and across the frozen Lake Furusjoen and up to undulating fells where elk winter in forests. Other trips include eight days in Kamben, with its equally gentle tracks and the wild landscapes of upland Norway, and an eight day winter experience trip in Hovda that features cross country skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding and ice fishing, with an optional scenic rail trip. All trips include return flights from London, taxes, transfers, half board accommodation (some with packed lunch as well) and the services of qualified guides.
