The state and EU-funded environmental projects for the restoration of the 1,000-year-old monastic community began this year.
Greece`s environment minister, Costas Laliotis, explains that the `Athos Program` has many goals to achieve, not the least of which includes infrastructure works to interrupt building deterioration and the preservation of the rich natural environment and cultural identity of Mount Athos.
The program also works to preserve the 350-square-meter Athonite Peninsula
About 20% of total funding goes toward the restoration and remodeling of guest facilities at the monastery, while 15% is earmarked for transport and fire-fighting improvements.
Entrance to the Mount Athos Monastery is restricted to males only, but all can cruise the area. The short cruises start from a small fishing cove, Ormos Panagious, and heads for the southwest tip of the peninsula.
It then turns back and sails towards the north along the west coast, which hosts the most beautiful of Greek monasteries crowned by Mount Athos.
